Energy consumption: bad balance

The energy balance of Statistics Austria shows that 2017 energy consumption and fossil energy increased, while the expansion of renewable energies with + 0,3 percent is almost silent. According to statistics, all other sources of energy have increased significantly: oil has been consumed by 1,9 percent, natural gas by 3,4 percent and coal by 5,2 percent more. In total, total energy consumption has increased by two percent. Net electricity imports remain at a high level with 10,4 percent.

"Austria's high dependence on fossil fuels, coupled with rising energy consumption, reveals the current weaknesses of the Austrian energy supply," commented Peter Püspök, President Renewable Energy Austria (EEÖ). Stefan Moidl, Managing Director of IG Windkraft speaks of a "poor record for the Austrian energy policy".
